On a bitterly cold afternoon on Sunday last, we held the second round of our Winter League for 2014. The early leaders this week were Liam Buckley’s team, consisting of Liam, Martin Carroll and new member Paul Isdale. Liam’s team had an incredible 14 under par round in the opening scramble. This score was made all the more impressive by the fact that there was an icy gale blowing across the course from the hurling pitch. Week 1 winners, Martin Carter’s team shared second place after the opening round with 12 up. Martin’s cause would not be helped though in the second round due to the absence of one of his team-mates, Michael Scally. Sharing second place was Kevin Farrell’s team which consisted of himself, David Penrose and Mark Foran. The fourth team after 18 holes was the ever consistent team of Tommy Archbold, Maurice Middleton and Paddy Gorman. Tommy’s team recorded a +11 score for the opening round.

Liam Buckley’s team were relentless though in their pursuit of victory. They followed their fine opening round with another 14 up scoreline in the second round to give them a total of +28. This was a score that was never going to be beaten in the wintery conditions of last Sunday. As expected Martin Carter and Watty Kenny faltered in the second round, as missing a man, eventually proved to be a burden too great to bare. They still finished a respectable +22 which was good enough for fourth on the day. Tommy Archbold’s team scored well in the second round to accumulate a total of +24 overall and finish in overall third. But the team who made a huge effort to catch Liam Buckley’s team was Kevin Farrell’s. Kevin’s team recorded a fabulous +15 scoreline in the second round to finish on +27 – 1 short of the leaders.

All this means that with one week to go there are still conceivably six of the eight teams in with a realistic chance of making the top three spots for the final. Martin Carter’s team leads with 12 points closely followed by Tommy Archbold’s team team on 11 points. Next is Liam Buckley’s team on 9 points. Fourth is Kevin Farrell’s team on 8 points and joint fifth is John Browne and Darren Reilly’s team on 7 points each. The third and final group match is Saturday 22nd of February at 12.30 pm.
