Ruane and Penrose win early season honours

Westmeath Classic Intermediate Winner – Stephen Ruane

Last Sunday saw the traditional beginning of the Pitch & Putt season for most players. It was the famous Jack McCormack Memorial Westmeath Classic. Kilbeggan was the home of this prestigious competition and it was no surprise that the Pitch and Putt community came from near and far to support this well known and respected competition. 169 competitors payed their entrance fee which is indeed a tremendous tribute to the late great Jack McCormack who was known country-wide for his achievements in the game.

The Kilbeggan course was presented in superb condition for the time of year and despite a sharp breeze – conditions proved to be suitable for good scoring. In the over-all category, Collinstown players failed to make an impact as Eamon Gibney from Castletown in Meath took the over-all prize with a superb score of 90. Damien Fleming was rewarded for his long trip from the Kingdom with the runners-up spot on 92 and Erry’s Joe McGrath took third also on 92.

The Intermediate and Junior section however yielded reward for the Collinstown contingent. Martin Carter set the early pace in the Inter section with a solid 97. Kilbeggan’s Johnny Feery overtook this total though with a 95. But Collinstown’s Stephen Ruane was to have the final say as he birdied the final 3 holes to also record a total of 95. Stephen took the spoils by virtue of those last 3 holes on a break of a tie.

Collinstown’s newest member David ‘Ducky’ Penrose was victorious in the Junior section. David had a solid opening 52 but followed it with a superb second round 48 to blow away the rest of the opposition in this section. David won’t be a Junior for long by the looks of things if he keeps scoring like that.

Finally Collinstown would like to congratulate the Westmeath County Board on a well run competition. Also well done to Kilbeggan on the hospitality that is always shown to their visitors. Finally a big thanks to the McCormack family for their continued sponsorship of this event. The 2014 season is well and truly underway!!
