DONIE WELDON DOUBLES FINAL.

On Wednesday evening last the 21st  we held the above final. The 4 competitors were John Browne & Gary Middleton versus Martin Carter & Ml. Scally. This was a much looked forward to final as both partnerships were playing great pitch and putt and demolished all opponents along the way. Play commenced at 5.30 pm and after the first 18 holes the sides were all square. At the halfway point in the second round Michael Scally & Martin Carter had a 2 hole advantage. This was soon to change thanks to the wonderful putting of Gary Middleton  and soon it was all square again. John & Gary closed out the match and won on the 17th 2 & 1. It was a great final and it was great also that Donie Weldon, who sponsored the shield for this competition was on hand to make the presentation.

CAPTAINS WEEKEND.

This was a busy one for our club members as it was Captains Weekend. Play commenced on Friday afternoon at 2 pm and there was quite a number of our members  on the course. Play continued all day Saturday and again on Sunday with last card at 5 pm and final round at 6pm. The 4 ladies in the final round were Ena Clinton, Mary Carroll, Anne Kelly & Moira Nugent. Moira had an 8 shot advantage over the rest of the field and she held on to that lead to run out easy winner. The runner up was Anne Kelly. In the Gents the 10  in the final round were Gary Middleton, Stuart Tarleton, Alan Hanlon, Ml. Buckley, Liam Buckley, Steven Ruane, Larry McGinn, John Browne, Darren Reilly and John McDonald. The Leader by 3 shots going out for the final round  was Gary Middleton but there were a few dark horses behind and these  made big strides in this round notably Larry McGinn who  gained 10 shots in this round. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as he was piped by the very in form man of the moment Alan Hanlon who ran on to be a worthy winner.

The full results are:
GENTS:
Winner – Alan Hanlon, R/Up – Larry McGinn,   Last 18 –  Michael Buckley,   36 Gross -Liam Buckley, 36 Nett -Gary Middleton.

LADIES:
Winner – Moira Nugent,  R/Up –  Anne Kelly.

Thanks to our esteemed Captains this year of Kathleen Bray & Watty Kenny. They spared no expense in their beautiful prizes and all the prizewinners were  loud in their praise for the prizes. Thanks to Martin Carter and John Browne who totted up all the scores over the 3 days. Thanks to the ladies and all who brought  edibles for the kitchen. A special word of thanks to Michelle who sent lovely Cheesecakes, buns etc. down with Peter. They were very much appreciated.   Thanks to Colm & Sean who had the greens in immaculate condition. Unfortunately our mower is temperamental at the moment and as a result the fairways weren’t as good as  they should be but hopefully this can be rectified soon.

We would like to welcome Frank and  Mary Hunt who have joined our club recently and it was great to see them down for the final round of the Captains Prizes.
