Paddy Bardon Shield – Week 3 Review

The third and final round of the group stages of the Paddy Bardon shield took place on Saturday last, 20th of April. The first match was the Group 1 affair between Mick Buckley’s team and Liam Buckley’s team. This was, in reality a play-off match for the runners-up spot in the group which meant that the opening scramble match was off great importance.  It was a very tightly fought match with Mick Buckley’s team just edging it in the end with a very respectably 42 gross.  This meant that Gary Middleton could then win the match for Mick’s team if he could defeat Mark Foran in the singles. This match was also closely fought but in the end Garry emerged the victor on the 16th. Liam Buckley and Stephen Ruane were victorious in the doubles over Mick Buckley and Mick Heffernan but this was too little too late and Mick Buckley’s team had already won the two points necessary to qualify for the semi-finals.

In Group 2 Kevin Farrell’s team had the unenviable task of needing a 3-0 result against Martin Carter’s team in order to stay in the competition. A solid 46 by Kevin, Ena Clinton (who was subbing for Kathleen Bray) and Des Carter meant that they won the opening point in the scramble. Des then had a good start against his brother Martin in the singles, going 2 up after 5 holes. Martin rallied however with a string of birdies and eventually ran out a 3 & 2 winner. George Carolan and Martin Carroll were also victorious by the same margin in the doubles over Kevin Farrell and Ena Clinton to give Martin Carter’s team a 2-1 victory.

This gave us the following line -up for the semi-finals:

Semi-Final 1: John Browne’s team Vs Liz Bloem’s team
Semi-Final 2: Martin Carter’s team Vs Mick Buckley’s team.

These semi-finals will be played on Wednesday evening 1st may at 6pm.
