Latest News - PRO's Weekly Report - 16-08-10
What a busy week this past one has been for the club. We have had the finals of 5 competitions during the past week.
GAVIGAN CUP.
On Tuesday evening last the 17th inst. we had the final of the above competition. This competition which is the only singles matchplay competition in the club was played to a finale in record time this year. The finalists were Peter Dolan and Brian Caffrey. This was a great game to watch and despite the fact that the Athboy man was giving 4 or 5 shots to Brian in each round he ran out winner easily enough as he was playing superb Pitch & Putt.
DES MCMANUS CUP.
This competition was played on Weds evening the 18th inst. and there was a great field of 22 players. Again there was great scoring in same and the winner once again was that in form man from Athboy Peter Dolan. R/Up was John McDonald. The winner in the ladies section was Ena Clinton.
Presentation of Prizes on both evenings was made by Competition Secretary Larry McGinn. Once again the course was in great order thanks to our workmen who are doing a great job.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR & COMMITTEES PRIZES.
On Saturday morning last, 21st inst. at 10 a.m. we had the semi-finals and finals of the above competitions. All the club competitions have been completed at this stage, thanks to the hard work of our two Competition Secretaries, Larry McGinn & John Browne. I don't think we have ever had the Player of the Year finals as early as this before. I know it was near Christmas last year.
The Committees Prize was first and those competing in same were Liam Buckley - v - Paul Byrne and Michael Buckley - v - John McDonald. The winners were the Buckley Brothers and the eventual winner was Liam Buckley with R/Up spot going to Michael.
In the Ladies Player of the Year the four semi-finalists were Anne Kelly - v - Ena Clinton and Liz Quinn - v - Moira Nugent. After the first 36 holes matchplay the victors were Anne Kelly and Liz Quinn. In the final Liz was giving 3 shots to Anne in each round. Anne putted very well in both her games but Liz ran out winner as was expected.
In the Gents section the semi-finalists were Martin Carter - v - Liam Hetherton and Larry McGinn - v - Peter Dolan. Both Martin Carter & Peter Dolan won their semis reasonably comfortably so the scene was set for a nail biting final. Peter was giving 3 shots to Martin and after the 1st 18 holes Martin was 4 up. Peter got a couple back in the 2nd 18 but Martin pulled away again and won comfortably on the 35th hole. This is Martin's 3rd final of the P. O. Y. on the trot and we congratulate him.
Afterwards we had a lovely salad lunch served by our Secretary Mary Carroll for which we are very grateful. Thanks also to Ena & Mary who had the unenviable task of buying all the prizes during the year and I think they did a great job. The course was in immaculate condition thanks to our workmen Sean and Colm and anyone else who helped out over the weeks. Thanks to Larry McGinn and John Browne who are Competition Secretaries and who do trojan work behind the scenes to ensure that all competitions are run on time also thanks to John who does great work with the web site. We are so lucky in our club to have some wonderful people on our committee.
Anyone who owes monies for competitions should make every effort to get them paid as soon as possible as our financial situation is not the best.
OUTING.
Our Annual Outing takes place to Tullamore on Saturday next the 28th inst. Mary is supplying a bus so if you wish to travel by Bus please let her know in plenty of time.
Finally just to wish Anne Kelly & Paul Byrne all the best on Sunday next the 29th in the Leinster Mixed Foursomes in Ringscommon, Dublin.
