John Flanagan presents the IUNVA Cup to this year’s winner – Liam Buckley

Twenty Three competitors took to the field for this year’s IUNVA cup on Wednesday evening last. The format was v-par and it was widely known that a big number was required in order to lift this sought-after trophy. The early leader in the clubhouse was John Browne with a very respectable +14. This however was soon overtaken by Liam Buckley with a superb +18 which included a 43 gross opening round. Liam then had the nervous wait, that every leader in the clubhouse dreads, to see if his score would stand up.

A lot of very decent scores were returned over the following 15 minutes or so with John McDonald, Stewie Tarleton and Alan Hanlon all returning +16. But as the cards were counted and recorded, Liam’s score was still standing as the leading score. The only remaining threat seemed to be from his brother Michael who was defending this cup. Rumour had it that Michael was +9 in the first round so certainly he was on track to threaten Liam’s score. In the end though Mick came up one short when he signed for a +17 total.

The Ladies prize was won comfortably by Ena Clinton on a score of -1. Unfortunately we don’t have a big quantity of Ladies playing the game anymore but it was good to see the few regulars turnout for this event.

John Flanagan was on hand to represent the IUNVA organisation. He spoke a few words before doing the presentation. He thanked the club for their association with IUNVA and said he was very happy to be a member of both organisations. He then wrapped up the evening by presenting the prizes to the Liam, Michael and Ena.
